The Diagonale is pleased to present Austria’s most prestigious film prizes again in 2023. A total of 19 film prizes were awarded during the award ceremony at the Orpheum in Graz.
The Carl Mayer and Thomas Pluch Screenplay Awards were presented at a ceremony in cooperation with the Department of Culture of the City of Graz and drehbuchVERBAND Austria on Friday morning at the Grand Hôtel Wiesler, Salon Frühling.
On the occasion of the Diagonale’23 in Graz, the Franz Grabner Award 2023, endowed with EUR 5,000 each, was awarded today in the categories film documentary and TV documentary. The award is sponsored by the Grabner family, the AAFP, the ORF and the Diagonale in memory of ORF journalist Franz Grabner (1955-2015). The prize is awarded for an ethically and morally responsible and credible approach by filmmakers to their medium.

On behalf of the board of the Franz Grabner Foundation, the Diagonale is pleased to announce the nominations for the Franz Grabner Award 2023.
During the festival opening on March 21, the Diagonale’23 will award for the 16th time the Grand Diagonale Acting Award for services to Austrian film culture. The Diagonale is pleased to announce that this year’s award goes to the legendary actress Margarethe Tiesel. The theatre, film and television actress will personally receive the award – an artwork by Xenia Hausner – in Graz.
With the In Referenz series, the Diagonale interlaces, mediates, and expands emphases of its current festival program. In 2023, together with the Filmarchiv Austria, the Festival of Austrian Film is dedicating a four-part cinematic homage to the Graz-born actress Marisa Mell, which will be accompanied by an extensive exhibition at the Graz Museum. Mell, the “Austrian Sophia Loren”, was one of the most famous women in European cinema in the 1960s and 1970s – a woman of the world from Graz, a rediscovery!
The Diagonale is pleased to announce that the Festival of Austrian Film will open on Tuesday, March 21 with Patric Chiha’s feature film The Beast in the Jungle (La bête dans la jungle, AT/BE/FR 2023, 103 min). This year, the feature film will be accompanied by Viktoria Schmid’s experimental miniature NYC RGB (US/AT 2023, 7 min), whose world premiere marks the start of the gala evening.
