In Speak Easy everyone talks to someone on the phone. Yet this could even be considered a film about incommunicability. Every teenager has his or her own language that is often incomprehensible to adults and, at the same time, every conversation is “filtered” through the telephone.
In her important Fly away Home Mirjam Unger has made everything develop on two distinct levels: on the one hand there is war, poverty, the destroyed city and the army. On the other is Christl with her curiosity about the world and her joie de vivre.
Looking back over the history of cinema, one cannot fail to notice the large number of Austrian women directors – contemporary and past – who have contributed (and still contribute) to an ever richer and more varied filmography that is indeed little known, but also incredibly diversified and full of surprises.
