Bei den Tiroler Kriegsadlern im Winter – recently restored by the Filmarchiv Austria and currently available on the new Filmarchiv On channel – appears today as a document of enormous historical importance. A witness to a (not too) distant era that can finally be observed in its true, painful nature only after many years.
Der Glücksschneider is a real gem within Austrian cinema. A short film that, while treasuring what was made in the meantime in the rest of the world (and, specifically, American slapstick comedies), nevertheless seeks its own way.
Watching a documentary like Budapest more than a century after its release – and being, above all, aware of the tragic situation experienced all over the world due to the war – gives us the impression of experiencing an unreal, alienating, and decidedly distorted film, which, however, is completely fascinating to us due to its character and ambiguous nature.
