In Nikolaus Leytner’s Half a Life, alongside a clear television character, far more complex moral issues concerning anger, resentment, deep sorrow and, last but not least, a heartbreaking sense of guilt are raised.
The Diver Inside is a film made up of silences, of confidences, of meaningful dialogues. All this is enriched by a real fascination for the art world in all its aspects, through the creation of stop-motion short films – with hands shaping and repositioning figures made of plasticine – as well as through jazz music composition.
Hotel sees its greatest strength in a direction made up of static and symmetrical frame compositions, with colours turning mainly to green or red. A power of images achieved thanks to the contribution of the cinematographer Martin Gschlacht, a long-time collaborator of Hausner and co-founder of the production company Coop99.
Pepe Danquart’s C(r)ook pis inspired by US gangster movies, but is also closely reminiscent of contemporary French comedies, thanks to a successful mix of genres, between polar and real comedy.
Absent from the 76th Venice Film Festival, Ulrich Seidl couldn’t present Wicked Games, his newest work. Yet, the controversial Austrian director is now at home at the Lido. Suffice it to say that his international notoriety was officially achieved in 2001, when he presented in competition Dog Days, which won the Grand Jury Prize.
