The Österreichischer Filmpreis 2024 were awarded at the Wiener Rathaus. Great satisfaction for the feature films The Devil’s Bath by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala (which won eight awards, including Best Film, Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role) and Rickerl by Adrian Goiginger, which won awards in four categories, including Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Voodoo Jürgens).

Best of 2024

And also this year, the best Austrian films were worthily celebrated. The Österreichischer Filmpreis 2024 have just been awarded as part of a ceremony at the Wiener Rathaus. During the award ceremony, presented by actress Emily Cox (nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Alma & Oskar) and presenter and cabaret artist Dirk Stermann, there were many surprises, confirmations and particularly moving moments, such as the remembrance of the famous producer Kurt Mayer, who passed away recently, and the speech given by the evening’s artistic director Thomas W. Kiennast, who, accompanied by his daughters, remembered his wife, producer Lisa Scheid, who also passed away prematurely.

The Akademie des Osterreichischen Films, chaired by actress Verena Altenberger and director and producer Arash T. Riahi, has thus chosen the best films produced in Austria for the fourteenth time, presenting a series of works that are all very diverse, all constantly looking for new ways to ‘play’ with the possibilities that cinema offers us. And so, at these Österreichischer Filmpreis 2024, two films in particular received a large number of awards. We are talking about The Devil’s Bath, directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, produced by Ulrich Seidl, and presented in competition at the Berlinale 2024, and Rickerl, the newest work by director Adrian Goiginger.

The Devil’s Bath thus won eight awards, including Best Film, Best Actress in a Leading Role (Anja Plaschg, also awarded for the soundtrack) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Maria Hofstätter), while Rickerl won four, including Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Voodoo Jürgens). But while many were definitely satisfied with these Österreichischer Filmpreis 2024, there were also, as usual, some disappointments (many, for instance, would have expected a nomination for the great Georg Friedrich – who gave the Best Actress in a Leading Role award to Anja Plaschg – for his performance in Ulrich Seidl’s Sparta).

But that’s all right. Actually, this has always been the case at every award ceremony. And at the end of these Österreichischer Filmpreis 2024 we can see first and foremost that the desire to create something new and, above all, the desire for good cinema are the true pillars of contemporary Austrian cinema. A cinema that is not afraid to dare, to shock, to surprise the viewer in every possible way without ever neglecting good quality. As announced by an amusing video starring actor and director Michael Ostrowski, more attention will also be paid to non-original screenplays next year. In the meantime, everyone can enjoy their well-deserved success with many new projects in mind. And who knows how many other nice surprises will be waiting for us!

Below are all the winners of these Österreichischer Filmpreis 2024. Congratulations to all and see you next year!
