grade: 7.5

In Sparschwein, Christoph Schwarz opted for a decidedly unusual directorial approach, resulting in a hybrid work, halfway between documentary and fiction film. And so we see how an initial challenge slowly becomes a real mission. At the Diagonale 2024.

New, unusual challenges

A definitely noteworthy director, Christoph Schwarz. Already author of numerous successful short films, in fact, he has finally dedicated himself to the making of a feature film, giving rise to a truly surprising project. A project that has developed more and more in the course of its realisation, to the point of giving rise to new, interesting initiatives and synergies. We are talking about Sparschwein, which had its world premiere at the Diagonale 2024.

As already mentioned, therefore, Sparschwein is a very unique feature film. As the credits already state, in fact, this work is a mockumentary. Christoph Schwarz, for his part, took advantage of some personal events to bring it to life. And so, after about a year’s work, we were finally able to see what the Viennese director has created.

Our filmmaker, therefore, is broke. Fortunately, however, he is offered the chance to work on a new project by the ORF. At the same time, however, during a trip to the Waldviertel, Christoph’s wife sees a small house for sale and falls in love with it. What if the ORF’s money could be used to buy the said house? Perhaps an even more interesting (albeit very demanding) challenge could arise from such a situation: to buy the house and try to live without money for a year at the same time, in order to prove that, in one way or another, there are different solutions to survive, thus rebelling against an increasingly capitalist society. Of course, this very challenge is destined to become a film: Sparschwein.

Choosing supermarket waste carefully. Planting vegetables wherever possible. Drinking a glass of wine from time to time when friends invite us. And again, going on a long trip to Carinthia, travelling mostly on foot and asking the locals for hospitality. Is it really possible to live without money? In Sparschwein, therefore, the discourse gradually becomes broader and more complex and comes to deal with extremely topical issues such as, first and foremost, environmental protection.

In making this important feature film of his, therefore, Christoph Schwarz opted for a decidedly unusual directorial approach, resulting in a hybrid work, halfway between documentary and fiction film, in which we ourselves often do not know where reality ends and fiction begins. According to a precise narrative structure, then, we see how an initial challenge slowly becomes a real mission. And through a witty and intelligent feature film in which there is also no shortage of decidedly hilarious situations, Christoph Schwarz himself took a decisive turn in his own life, becoming an activist himself. Letting a film change our existence. Is this not, then, one of the many functions of our beloved cinema?
