The beginning of a new era

Finally, a new adventure will soon begin. Soon the beautiful Graz will be coloured by many new films that have further enriched the Austrian film universe over the past year. The Diagonale 2024, in fact, will take place from April 4 to 9 and this year also represents the beginning of a new era for the Festival of Austrian Film. After numerous editions directed by the duo Sebastian Höglinger and Peter Schernhuber, in fact, for the first year the artistic direction of the festival has been entrusted to Claudia Slanar and Dominik Kamalzadeh, who, as usual, have created a particularly rich and varied programme, which includes, in addition to the films in competition, also several side sections. But let’s take a closer look at what specifically awaits us over the next few days!

With regard to the feature films presented at this Diagonale 2024, for example, we cannot fail to mention The Devil’s Bath, the newest work by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, which was so successful at the recent Berlinale 2024, but also Andrea gets a Divorce by Josef Hader, also presented in Berlin, What a Feeling by Kat Rohrer, Europa by Sudabeh Mortezai, Veni vidi vici by Daniel Hoesl and Julia Niemann (recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2024), Animal by Sofia Exarchou and Asche, the newest directorial work by Elena Wolff.

Regarding the documentaries to be presented at the Diagonale 2024, it must be said that this year’s Festival of Austrian Film will be opened with a documentary: Favoriten by Ruth Beckermann, which also had its world premiere at the Berlinale 2024 and will be screened during the opening night in the Helmut List Halle, after the awarding of the Grand Diagonale Acting Award to Lukas Miko. Other titles in this section include Corpus Homini by Anatol Bogendorfer, Pandora’s Legacy by Angela Christlieb, Vista Mare by Julia Gutweniger and Florian Kofler, The Standstill, the newest work by Nikolaus Geyrhalter, 24 Hours by Harald Friedl and Hacking at Leaves by Johannes Grenzfurthner, just to name a few.

As usual, therefore, this Diagonale 2024 will also devote special attention to experimental cinema – produced copiously in Austria – within the Innovatives Kino section, where, among the numerous films proposed, we can also watch, for example, Mare Imbrium, the newest work by Siegfried A. Fruhauf, Valley Pride by Lukas Marxt, re-BIRDING by Michaela Schwentner, The Tuner by Sascha Pirker and Palmer by Friedl vom Gröller.

But that’s not all! As has been the case for many years now, in fact, this Diagonale 2024 will also feature several collateral sections, including, specifically, retrospectives dedicated to Austrian director and photographer Lisl Ponger and German director Christoph Hochhäusler, and a special section dedicated to film history, with a focus on the theme of immigration. If we also add to this numerous meetings, debates and exhibitions, we realise how intense these five days of the festival will be. In short, everyone will have a wide choice to experience the event in the best possible way.

Ready for a new adventure? The city of Graz is waiting for us. Let’s get comfortable in the cinema, the show is about to begin!
