A new adventure in Villach

It’s finally here! On Wednesday, December 6, the K3 Film Festival 2023 will kick off in Villach! Now in its seventeenth edition, the festival, founded by Fritz Hock and directed by him together with Piera Nodari, has become the most important cultural event in Carinthia and has always stood out for its special focus on the regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Slovenia and, last but not least, Carinthia. Three regions, three histories, three different traditions. Thousands and thousands of stories that find their fulfillment on the movie screen. The K3 Film Festival has always stood out for its careful observation of three different worlds that are very close to one another and for its desire to create many bridges connecting these worlds, in a constant search for beauty in all its forms.

From December 6 to 10, therefore, at the Stadtkino Villach, during the K3 Film Festival 2023 we will experience many, new adventures in the dark of the theatre, with as many feature and short films, all extremely varied in terms of style and technique, but all contributing together to create a great fresco that, this year, will have the theme “Ideals/Idols” as its leitmotif.

Among the feature films at the K3 Film Festival 2023, we will first of all find Wake me, the festival’s opening film, directed by Slovenian director Marko Šantić, and presented here as an Austrian premiere. The following days will also include screenings of films such as Robert Hofferer’s Verity Circle (also in its Carinthian premiere), Flo Lackner’s Operation White Christmas, Davide Salucci’s extraordinary debut feature Artificial Truth (in its Austrian premiere), and Margarethe von Trotta’s Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey into the Desert (already screened in competition at the Berlinale 2023), Das Gedächtnis der Welten by Mirko Locatelli (Carinthian premiere) and, last but not least, the festival’s closing film, My Sentence by Amina Handke (also a Carinthian premiere, based on the play Kaspar by Nobel Prize winner Peter Handke and already premiered at the Viennale 2022), and Malina (Werner Schroeter, 1991), a tribute to the writer Ingeborg Bachmann and the actress Libgart Schwarz, who will be present on Sunday 10 with her daughter Amina Handke.

But that’s not all! In fact, the K3 Film Festival 2023 will also present no less than three short film programmes in competition, a section dedicated to documentaries and short films that will give us a closer insight into characters and realities linked in particular to Carinthia, and finally the Fresh Up! section, dedicated to independent short films and debut works. Not enough? Absolutely not! And in fact, for anyone who wants to get wild while listening to good music, a concert by the Hungarian band Strompopper will take place at Kulturhof Villach on Friday 8 at 10.30 p.m., during which the Triestine artist Goga Mason will present her Live-Visuals.

In short, this K3 Film Festival 2023 will be full of good surprises, and there will be no shortage of debates and discussions with the audience and meetings with filmmakers and industry professionals. Cinema Austriaco will follow the event closely and offer a specific focus on what has been made in Austria. Ready, then, for a new adventure? Soon the lights will go out and magic will happen on the movie screen…
