In Anna Fucking Molnar, Sabine Derflinger has mainly played with some of the constants of her cinema, making her film an extremely topical comedy with a strong feminist character.

The power of a woman

How difficult is it to establish oneself in the working world, when the latter is still a strongly patriarchal environment? The acclaimed actress Anna Molnar (played by Nina Proll, also author of the screenplay), the protagonist of the romantic comedy Anna Fucking Molnar, directed in 2017 by Sabine Derflinger and which, given the themes it deals with, is fully in line with the canons of cinema of the director and documentary filmmaker from Wels, knows something about this.

Here, then, is staged the story of Anna, who is getting ready for the premiere of a play in which she is the protagonist, but who, shortly before going on stage, catches her partner Laszlo (played by Gregor Bloeb, her partner also in real life) cheating on her with a younger colleague in the dressing room. After drinking a cocktail of alcohol and pills, she feels ill on stage and is rescued by the fireman Christian (Murathan Muslu), with whom she starts a relationship, but who still has unfinished business with his ex-wife (Franziska Weisz). Will our Anna be able to regain control of her life and finally learn to love herself?

In Anna Fucking Molnar, then, we see how the protagonist, in fact, finds herself practically alone in a purely male world: her ex-partner Laszlo (a director and stage actor) sends her away and charges her 30. 000 euros for having ruined his premiere; her father (Uwe Ochsenknecht) is married to a much younger woman than him (Nadeshda Brennicke), but continues to have numerous affairs; finally, Christian, although he proves to be a kind and understanding man, seems to have difficulty letting go with her, still too involved in the relationship that has just ended with his wife.

Sabine Derflinger, for her part, has mainly played with certain constants of her cinema, making her Anna Fucking Molnar an extremely topical comedy with a strong feminist character. Anna manages, despite numerous difficulties, to fend for herself. At the same time, the men in her life often prove to be excessively ‘weak’ and emotional, especially when they fail to prove their ‘masculinity’. The director is not afraid, therefore, to deal with ‘uncomfortable’ topics such as sex, male impotence and injustice in the world of work. And yet, all this is never treated in a vulgar or banal way, but is perfectly placed within a romantic comedy that is on the whole well-written and well-directed, which makes certain secondary characters (and a delightful dreamlike scene in which Anna, in the style of a 1960s diva, improvises a choreography in the swimming pool together with the men in her life) further workhorses.

Particularly noteworthy in Anna Fucking Molnar are the male figures who make the protagonist’s life not always easy: in addition to her father, Christian and Laszlo, the characters of her psychologist (Robert Palfrader), the eccentric director Bernd (Markus Schleinzer) and her father’s urologist (an always excellent Simon Schwarz) are very interesting. In this merry-go-round of characters who make certain clichés their main strength, then, Anna Fucking Molnar succeeds in its own way in drawing a comprehensive and disenchanted portrait of the world we live in. It is not easy being a woman, that is true. Yet, in spite of everything, one always manages to find a way to survive.
