Issues with my other Half is an extremely topical and surprising film. Not only the many potentialities of cinema, but also – and above all – external factors that have made us different from what we were only a few years ago are (almost) the absolute protagonists here. At the festival Sotto le Stelle dell’Austria 2023.

Playing with the body (and cinema)

How many (and what) are the possibilities of cinema to manipulate reality? As we all know, we can play with the camera, editing and special effects in as many ways as we want, each time creating something totally new and surprising. Director Anna Vasof, who had fun ‘modifying’ her own body in the short film Issues with my other Half, which was already presented at the Tricky Women/Tricky Realities Film Festival and premiered in Italy at the festival Sotto le Stelle dell’Austria 2023, knows this well.

On this occasion, therefore, the director also plays the leading role. And from the very first frames what we see is, in fact, what we do not expect: an hourglass covers the director’s face. When the hourglass is turned upside down, the same happens to the image of the protagonist. But that is not all. A mask is used as a slingshot. The moment the director throws it against a mirror, the same mask magically ends up on her own face.

Skilful editing, meanwhile, gives us images that are both funny and meaningful at the same time: the director’s face appears to us now upside down, now totally without eyes, now completely ’empty’ and with her features placed on the cover of a mobile phone. The same mobile phone into which, at a certain point, the protagonist’s entire head is transformed. And so, as we see legs instead of arms and vice versa, or even the woman’s body split in half going on a swing or diving into the water from a boat, we realise how cinema can bring the most incredible stories to life.

Issues with my other Half, therefore, is an extremely topical and surprising film. Not only the numerous potentialities of cinema, but also – and above all – external factors that have made us no longer what we were only a few years ago play (almost) the leading role here. The pandemic, but also technology and mobile phones, which are now so imperiously part of our everyday life, are mentioned by Anna Vasof in a never banal or rhetorical way, and in the singular mise-en-scene she adopts they become part of a kind of divertissement with magnetic and captivating images.

In Issues with my other Half, therefore, the animation takes off from scenes filmed entirely in live action and, thanks to dynamic and ‘imaginative’ editing, takes on very specific meanings. Anna Vasof, for her part, knows exactly what she wants to communicate to us. And she does it with irony and self-irony, having fun experimenting each time with new languages to tell us about the world we live in. A promising talent who will certainly give us many more nice surprises in the future.
