Best of Austrian Cinema
It’s that time again! During a press conference at the Ringturm of the Wiener Städtischen Versicherungsverein, the nominations for the prestigious Österreichischer Filmpreis 2023 were announced today, Thursday, April 20. This year, as every year, numerous films were submitted for possible nominations. And after a particularly good year for Austria, the choice on the part of the Akademie des Österreichischen Films (founded in 2009 and chaired, since last year, by director Arash T. Riahi and actress Verena Altenberger) must not have been easy at all. The award ceremony will take place on June 15 at the Globe Wien in the Marx-Halle, under the artistic direction of director Catalina Molina.
As usual, in this year’s Österreichischer Filmpreis 2023, there are feature films that were particularly successful. These are films that have already been presented at major national and international festivals and have often also won important awards. Marie Kreutzer’s Corsage, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2022, for example, is the film with the most nominations (eight), including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress in a Leading Role (Vicky Krieps).
David Wagner’s Eismayer (screened at the Venice Film Festival 2022, in the section Settimana della Critica, where it was awarded Best Film), on the other hand, received no less than seven nominations in these Österreichischer Filmpreis 2023, including Best Film and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Gerhard Liebmann). And while Leni Lauritsch’s Rubikon and Adrian Goiginger’s The Fox received no less than five nominations each, equally great satisfactions were received by Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel‘s beautiful Vera (also awarded in Venice) and Chris Raiber’s First Snow of Summer (four nominations each).
As usual, these Österreichischer Filmpreis 2023 also devoted special attention to documentaries (in this respect, Claudia Müller‘s Elfriede Jelinek – Language Unleashed even received three nominations) and short films, in order to celebrate every possible field of contemporary Austrian cinema. A filmography that is always ready to experiment, to discover new worlds and new languages, and that every year proves to be richer and more varied than ever.
Until we find out which film will be awarded this year, therefore, we only have to wait a little less than two months. In the meantime, here are all the nominations for the Österreichischer Filmpreis 2023. Good luck to all the nominees!
