Just as it was in Love Machine, in Love Machine 2 a series of gags complement a script that is at times a little too predictable, but which, overall, provides the viewer with an hour and a half of laughter. The charisma of Georgy (and, of course, of talented Thomas Stipsits) is the real focus around which the whole film revolves.

Hit me baby one more time

A great success in 2019, even awarded as the audience’s favourite film at the Österreichischer Filmpreis 2020, Love Machine is probably one of the most successful feature films directed by Andreas Schmied. In fact, many will remember the adventures of Georgy (played by the famous cabaret artist Thomas Stipsits), who, having moved in at his sister Gitti’s (Julia Edtmeier), starts working as a gigolo thanks to the many clients at Gitti’s beauty salon. Having fallen in love with beautiful Jadwiga (Claudia Kottal), however, it will be a problem to carry on this new “business” of his. So, will they all live happily together? Not quite. And, in fact, in the long-awaited Love Machine 2, made by Schmied himself in 2022, we see how things turned out differently from the happy ending we had all imagined.

In fact, two years have passed since Georgy and Jadwiga unexpectedly broke up. In order to forget his lost love, Georgy decided to move to Thailand to become a Buddhist monk. Convinced to return to Vienna by a charming lady he met there, however, he discovers that his ex has been searching high and low for him because of unexpected news: he is the father of little Waldemar, born a few months after his break-up with Jadwiga. What to do, then, to be able to pay alimony?

Never change a winning team. And, in fact, in Love Machine 2 we find practically all the same characters that made the first film famous: not only Georgy and his beloved, but also his sister Gitti and her boss, Josefine (Ulrike Beimpold), who has to finance her new business (a gigolo agency), but is constantly at odds with her regarding its management. And then, of course, one cannot fail to mention the various would-be gigolos, each of them too clumsy to be successful with women, each of them with well-marked characteristics that make him resemble a caricature (above all, the would-be playboy Adriano – played by Erich Altenkopf – a man of “Italian” charm).

Just as it was in Love Machine, therefore, also in Love Machine 2 a series of gags complement a screenplay that is sometimes a little too predictable, but which, overall, provides the viewer with an hour and a half of laughter. The charisma of Georgy (and, of course, of talented Thomas Stipsits) is the real focus around which the entire film revolves. From the very first scenes, in which we see the protagonist in Thaliandia singing Britney Spears’ hit …Baby One More Time with the monks, we realise how this newest feature by Andreas Schmied has maintained the approach of Love Machine, but we soon realise how two totally opposite worlds (the prostitution world and the children’s world) manage to find a bizarre meeting point.

And, in fact, in this his Love Machine 2, the director is not afraid to dare and exaggerate, presenting the audience solutions that are sometimes a little too contrived, but which, somehow, give life to an overall entertaining story, a story without too many pretensions and which suffers from the many (too many?) clichés involved, but which – as we can well imagine – will undoubtedly appeal to a good number of viewers. And who knows if, in the future, a third chapter of the saga will also arrive in cinemas.
