Many new stories in Vienna

Soon, the beautiful Vienna will once again be enriched with many, many new colours. The long-awaited Viennale 2022 will soon begin and many new films will allow viewers of all ages to experience new, exciting adventures on screen! And even just briefly reading the programme, we can see how this festival promises to be full of exciting surprises.

This Viennale 2022, which will take place from October 20 to November 1 under the artistic direction of Eva Sangiorgi, presents a particularly rich and varied programme, where, alongside the films of the official selection, we also find numerous other retrospectives and monographs designed to make this new festival experience rich in ideas and to make the audience better acquainted with authors who have in their own way made the film world great.

The festival will start on Thursday, October 20. For the occasion, the opening film will be the interesting and emotional Vera, the newest feature film by directors Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel, already premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where the two filmmakers received the Best Director Award and Vera Gemma was awarded Best Actress in the section Orizzonti. Other titles in the programme of the Viennale 2022 include, among others, Crimes of the Future by David Cronenberg, Final Cut by Michel Hazanavicius, Armageddon Time by James Grey, Saint Omer by Alice Diop, The Whale by Darren Aronofsky and even Film Socialisme, in homage to the unforgettable Jean-Luc Godard, just to name a few.

In addition to special retrospectives dedicated to the Japanese director Yoshida Kijū, the Iranian filmmaker Ebrahim Golestan and the Mauritanian-born French director and actor Med Hondo, and an interesting section dedicated to Argentinian film noir, particularly noteworthy is the section Österreich real, realised in collaboration with the Filmarchiv Austria, in which twelve documentaries made in Austria between 1981 and 2021 will be presented.

Yes, Austria. As usual, numerous Austrian feature films, documentaries and short films will be premiered at this Viennale 2022. In addition to the aforementioned Vera, during the festival it will be possible to watch works such as the beautiful Eismayer, directed by David Wagner and also presented in Venice, winner of the Best Film Award in the section Settimana della Critica, but also the controversial and long-awaited Sparta, Ulrich Seidl‘s newest feature, Mutzenbacher by Ruth Beckermann, My Sentence by Amina Handke, Matter out of Place, Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s newest documentary, Gastón Solnicki’s A little Love Package, the documentary Elfriede Jelinek – Language unleashed, directed by Claudia Müller, and the short films Marine Target by Lukas Marxt, Blind Date and Staging Death by Jan Soldat, Bildwerden by Christiana Perschon and Hardly Working by the Total Refusal collective, just to name a few.

A particularly noteworthy event during the Viennale 2022 is the presentation of the book Picturing Austrian Cinema, curated by Katharina Müller and Claus Philipp. The book, published in both English and German, will be presented on Wednesday, October 26, at 6 pm at the Filmmuseum. 99 authors took part in its realisation, for an equal number of frames from the most important Austrian films made from 1945 to the present day. An essential document to better understand the recent Austrian film history.

In short, a Viennale 2022 full of interesting events and beautiful surprises. Wonderful Vienna is waiting to give us once again a lot of emotions. All we have to do now is make ourselves comfortable in the theatre and let ourselves be transported every day by the many colourful stories on screen.
