ÖSTERREICHISCHER FILMPREIS 2022 – THE NOMINATIONS

This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian) Deutsch (German)

Yesterday, Thursday, May 5, the nominations for the Österreichischer Filmpreis 2022 were announced. Once again, the Akademie des Österreichischen Films, chaired this year by actress Verena Altenberger and director Arash T. Riahi, selected some of the best films made in Austria during the last year. The award ceremony will take place on June 30 in Grafenegg, Lower Austria, supervised by director Clara Stern.

Waiting for the award ceremony…

It won’t be long now. Yesterday, Thursday, May 5, the nominations for the Österreichischer Filmpreis 2022 were announced. Once again, therefore, the Akademie des Österreichischen Films, founded in 2009 and chaired this year by actress Verena Altenberger and director Arash T. Riahi, has selected some of the best films made in Austria during the last year. And again this year, as every year, there were many surprises and acknowledgements.

Among all the feature films present, particular satisfaction was gained by Fox in a Hole, made by Arman T. Riahi, the opening film of the Diagonale 2021, and by Great Freedom by Sebastian Meise, already included in the programme of the Cannes Film Festival 2021, before being re-presented to the audience at the Viennale 2021. Both feature films – the first set in a juvenile prison, the second, also set in a prison, about the living conditions of homosexuals after the end of World War II – received no less than ten nominations each, including Best Film and Best Director, as well as important recognitions for the actors.

Great satisfaction was also achieved by Philipp Stölzl’s The Royal Game – based on the book Schachnovelle by Stefan Zweig – and Hinterland, by Oscar winner Stefan Ruzowitzky, which, set after the end of World War I, immediately stood out for its refined sets and its strongly expressionist touch. Both films obtained six nominations each and turned out to be some of the most interesting revelations. Similarly, Moneyboys, directed by young director C. B. Yi and also present first at the Cannes Film Festival 2021, then at the Viennale 2021, turned out to be a pleasant surprise, to the point of obtaining five nominations for these Österreichischer Filmpreis 2022, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Concerning documentaries, no less than four were nominated for Best Documentary this year. If, in fact, already at the Berlinale 2020 Notes from the Underworld by the renowned Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel and Runnung on Empty by young Lisa Weber had great success, equally pleasing is the presence in competition of Auslegung der Wirklichkeit – Georg Stefan Troller by Ruth Rieser and Space Dogs, directed in 2019 by Elsa Kremser and Levin Peter.

In a nutshell, what we are expecting is an edition of the Österreichischer Filmpreis 2022 full of surprises and great satisfaction. The award ceremony will take place on June 30 in Grafenegg, Lower Austria, supervised by director Clara Stern. All we have to do now is wait just under two months to find out who will win these important awards this year. In the meantime, good luck to all and may the best win!
