ÖSTERREICHISCHER FILMPREIS 2021 – THE NOMINATIONS

Today, Thursday, April 29, the nominations for the prestigious Österreichischer Filmpreis 2021, one of the most important film awards in Austria, were announced. The award ceremony was supposed to take place at the end of January, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic it has been postponed and will take place on July 8 at the Globe Wien.

DIAGONALE’21 – PREMIERE TOUR: ULRIKE OTTINGER

Within the framework of a joint tour together with the Austrian Film Museum and Crossing Europe Film Festival Linz, the Diagonale’21 will premiere Ulrike Ottinger’s Paris Calligrammes (DE/FR 2019) in Graz. Ottinger, who was honored at the Berlinale 2020 for her life work, will be present at the screenings in Linz, Vienna, and Graz. Ten Austrian works will celebrate their shared premieres in the programs of the Diagonale and the Crossing Europe Film Festival Linz, including the world premieres of the feature films Motorcity and 2551.01.

DONAUBALLADE

Poetic images of tourists chatting and sunbathing aboard a boat, huge expanses of green, village people going about their daily business, and – last but not least – carefully curated, pastel-coloured cinematography are the trademarks of Donauballade, as well as of most documentaries like it produced in these years.

HOLD-UP

No one is really innocent or completely guilty in Hold-Up. Or, better still, each of the three characters is both victim and executioner at the same time. And this feature film by Florian Flicker stands out above all for its good screenplay, thanks to which moments of tension cleverly alternate with much more light-hearted scenes.

DURCH DIE WACHAU

Thinking back to Karl Köfinger’s early films, we recall how – alongside numerous static shots – he had opted mainly for totals to show the realities depicted in their entirety. Yet in Durch die Wachau, the human being himself is put in the foreground.

GOODNIGHT MOMMY – UPCOMING REMAKE WITH NAOMI WATTS

A remake of the successful feature film Goodnight Mommy, directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala in 2014, will soon be made in the US. The two Austrian directors will take part in the production of the film, wich will be directed by American Matt Sobel. In the leading role: the versatile Naomi Watts, who already took part in the US remake of Michael Haneke’s Funny Games in 2007.
