This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian) Deutsch (German)

Due to the dramatic situation we are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Diagonale 2020, like many other events, was unfortunately cancelled. And yet, despite the difficulties, despite the numerous damages suffered, the Diagonale team did not lose heart and, as far as possible, managed, at least in part, to make debates and film screenings available to the audience via streaming, thanks to partner platforms that made a wide range of festival-related offers available. Cinema Austriaco has decided to dedicate this special section to the Diagonale 2020. Articles concerning the festival’s press releases, as well as reviews of the films in the programme, will be linked within this section. Hoping that we will soon restart even more enthusiastic and motivated than before!

Due to the dramatic situation we are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Diagonale 2020, like many other events, was unfortunately cancelled. The Diagonale 2020 was to take place from March 24 to 29, 2020. From Tuesday 24, then, it will be possible to access a large number of screenings (some of which will remain available for about a month) and live streaming. Likewise, what should have been the programme of this 2020 edition has already been published online on the festival’s website, and the catalogue can already be ordered.

Cinema Austriaco, for its part, has decided to dedicate this special section to the Diagonale 2020. Within this section, all articles concerning the festival’s press releases will be correlated at the bottom of this post, as well as reviews of the films in the programme (some watched during previous events, others thanks to the media made available by the festival in these days). Hoping to start again as soon as possible even more enthusiastic and motivated than before!

Below, as per the press release, is, in detail, how everything was organised in order to bring this rich and varied Diagonale 2020 to life – even if only online.

Diagonale’20 – The unfinished – A project proposal

“If one remembers this year’s festival programme in a few years’ time, one will most likely remember the works of directors who first made themselves known to a wider audience at this Diagonale, but whose characteristic directorial approach has become an integral part of Austrian cinema.” When this sentence was written, we did not know that the Diagonale 2020 would be cancelled a few hours later and that the festival would be remembered for completely different reasons. In any case, it was originally intended to be included in a press kit available at the programme presentation. We don’t want to hide the latter from you any longer. This was to be the programme of the Festival of Austrian Film in Graz: Diagonale ’20 – The unfinished.

Diagonale dashboard

The Diagonale has always presented itself as an open forum. Consequently, and in the sense of making available current works from the festival programme selected for 2020 (and beyond), with the Diagonale dashboard, directors can temporarily present their films on the festival website in a manner they define, thus making them available to a wider audience. Based on an idea by Virgil Widrich.

Heimat is a space in time by Thomas Heise, a film from the Diagonale 2020 programme is already available on Vimeo. From Tuesday also on the Diagonale dashboard.

We photograph the world. In the catalogue. With a bibliography and a special edition of The Gap. In 2021.

The Diagonale catalogue is a representative reference work and unique chronicle of Austrian cinema – as is the catalogue of the cancelled Diagonale 2020. In an earlier essay, the editorial team of kolik.film devotes itself to the cultural-political developments, trends and tendencies of the film year. The catalogue is published by Czernin Verlag and can be ordered online.
