As essential meeting point for film enthusiasts from Austria and abroad, the Diagonale screens roughly 100 current Austrian feature, documentary, and short films in its competition and awards Austria’s most highly endowed film prizes. The heart of the festival also offers the framework for numerous world premieres and first showings in Austria of the latest productions following their presentation at renowned international festivals abroad. Additionally, screenings in the context of an annual review offer a comprehensive picture of the status quo of local filmmaking.
In the Zur Person series, the Diagonale 2020 focuses on director Jessica Hausner and her highly regarded portfolio. Starting from her current film Little Joe, which in 2019 was the only Austrian contribution to the renowned competition of the film festival in Cannes, the Diagonale’20 will show the first retrospective of Hausner’s overall oeuvre in Austria. Accompanied by in-depth talks and cinematic cross-references, the Spotlight on format also illustrates Hausner’s understanding of film and cinema.
The video artist Jennifer Mattes will design the Diagonale 2020 festival trailer and will also show her solo exhibition “Die Bars von Atlantis” at the Kunsthaus Graz, parallel to the festival. In consideration of Graz’s Kulturjahr 2020, the Diagonale, Filmarchiv Austria, the Austrian Film Museum, and the ORF Archive turn to the key terms city and desire in the upcoming historical special and brush against the grain of affiliated themes via cinematic (re-)discoveries.
There’s lots to discover in Graz. In the cinema, on the screen, and beyond. We are looking forward to your visit! Should you be interested in accreditation and attending the Diagonale’20, please contact Matthias K. Heschl: presse@diagonale.at
